Distribution & Habitat:
Foxtail Palms were only discovered in the late 1970's and soon there was high demand for the seeds of this extraordinary palm. As the palms were being endemic to only a very small area, Cape Melville on Cape York peninsular in North Queensland, a flourishing black market in the seeds developed.
Wodyetia bifurcata was put on the list of endangered species. Today, thousands and thousands of Foxtail Palms are grown in cultivation.
Culture:
Wodyetia bifurcata is an extremely hardy palm. It is able to take full sun from a very early age, is drought, wind and, to a degree, frost tolerant.
Description:
This is a very attractive palm which is fast becoming very popular as a feature in garden design.
The Foxtail Palm grows to about 8 to 10 metres tall. The trunk is grey and closely ringed with a spectacular crown of up to 10 pale green arching fronds, which resemble a tail of a fox.
Climate Zones:
Although from the tropics this palm also grows well in the sub-tropics and even in temperate climates.
