Ptychosperma microcarpum
New Guinea Cluster Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
Ptychosperma microcarpum is endemic to Papua New Guinea. It grows there in rainforests from sea level to mountainous forests up to 600 metres high.
Culture:
There is not much information about this palm available. However, it seems that this species is not particular fuzzy with regards to the soil it is growing in.
Description:
The New Guinea Cluster Palm is a great, very easy and fast growing palm for tropical and subtropical gardens.
The clustered, compact trunks grow to about 5 metres tall but often even to 10 metres. Some specimen of Ptychosperma microcarpum only grow a solitary trunk. The crownshafts are olive-green, silvery, sometimes almost white.
Climate Zones:
Although a tropical species, it should grow in frost free areas along the Australian coasts.
