Coccothrinax alta
Silver Thatch Palm

Distribution & Habitat:
Coccothrinax alta originates in Puerto Rico and the rainforests in the Caribbean.

Culture:
This palm wants a well draining soil and will grow in full sun once established. Young plants should be protected from strong winds and harsh sun.

Description:
Coccothrinax alta is a slow growing palm with a single bare trunk below and matted with fibres above. The trunk can grow up to 8 metres in height. The graceful, drooping green fan leaves are silver underneath which is very effective when the wind and sun is right. An exceptional palm species which is not often found in any ones garden.

Climate Zones:
Coccothrinax alta is quite cold hardy and can take temperatures down to freezing point if not for extended periods of time. It should be growing well along the east coast of Australia.
