Bismarck Palm
Distribution & Habitat:
Bismarckia nobilis is native to the east coast of Madagascar where it shares home with many other unique and fascinating palm species.
Culture:
This palm is adaptable to many kinds of soil. It prefers full sun but will also tolerate some shade. Once established the Bismarck Palm is quite drought tolerant.
Climate Zones:
Bismarck Palms can be grown in tropical and sub-tropical areas and even in warmer parts of temperate zones. Although a tropical palm it has been known to recover the next season if occasionally hit by light frost.
Description:
This spectacular tropical fan palm commands attention in any garden able to accommodate it.
The Bismarck palm grows a single, stout trunk which is smooth in mature specimens but young plants retain their old leaf bases for a while. It can grow to a height of 15 to 18 metres with a huge crown of about 25 fronds which spread up to 6 metres. The huge leaves are greyish blue and are 3 metres across. This palm adds interest and drama to your landscape and serves as a living sculpture. If you have the space it will be outstanding in your garden.
